Zuiko and a River

A river runs through it.

Canon S90, 7.5mm, f/8.0, 1/20s, ISO80

It has been more than 10 years since I visited this small Malay village en-route to Slim River from Tanjong Malim. The water still flows cool and clear. The scene is still beautiful. Nature at its finest.

It was an impromptu visit, and I didn't have my swimming trunk and even the DSLR with me. Luckily, the Canon S90 point-and-shoot was there.

While the IS helped a lot to get low shutter speed to get the water flowing effect while ensuring the image is sharp and crisp, I was not able to get a lower shutter speed to say 1/4s. This was because of the f-stop limitation! The S90 only allowed until F8.0, as this was the theoretical limit before diffraction effect kicked in. Even with ISO80, the shutter speed wouldn't go lower than 1/15s.

Nonetheless, the S90 did a very good job. I got the image as I perceived it to be. That's the bottom line.

I think those flowing water at slow shutter speed pics are done to death. Reminds me of the framed decorative clocks or those electric plasticky pseudo paintings. You shot is nice and natural and gives me a good feel of the scene - I visit Malaysia only a few weeks a year now and I have not scheduled time to get to that kind of scene.

Yes, the slow shutter speeds shots are done to death.. but somehow, I never had a chance to do it.

I need to enjoy the beauty of the rainforest more... :)
